When I was about 12 years old I heard Lena Horne say that you had to start preparing for 50 at 25. At the time, even 25 seemed a long way off. I don’t think that I consciously started preparing for 50 at 25, however, I think that I have always been conscious of trying to be healthy. Consequently, I was never bothered by birthdays – not 25, 30, 40, 45, or 50. I never felt like the number had any connection to me.

That changed last year. Last year I turned 55. It was not being 55 that unnerved me, it was the thought that I am almost 60! For months before my birthday I experienced tremendous anxiety around that thought. I realized that 60 is likely to be the birthday that distresses me. Therefore, I need to prepare to be ready physically, mentally / emotionally, financially, and spiritually for facing my 60th birthday and beyond – because I know that I am going to live to be 100.

In the year since my 55th birthday (February 10th) I have been working on these aspects of life. This year when I turned 56 I was not quite as anxious about approaching 60 as I was last year. By writing a blog about my path to 60 I hope that I can help others see the potential that I see to be healthy, happy, and productive for as many years as your presence graces this wonderful world in which we live.
