Ageless Beauty

“If you define beauty as an expression of elegance and sophistication, beauty has no age” – Isabella Rossellini

I love this quote from Isabella Rossellini, who has recently at the age of 65 been hired by Lancome, after being told at 42 that her contract was not being renewed because she was too old.

I feel like this is a European mindset that is very different from the typical American mindset on ageing. The American mindset centers on youth and looking as young as possible. This youth mindset puts pressure on women (and maybe men, too) to resort to things like Botox and surgery to maintain a youthful look. And while these procedures may make you look younger, I am not certain that they make you look better.

I have always felt that the people who look their best as they age are those who allow themselves to age naturally and gracefully. In addition to Isabella Rossellini, Susan Sarandon, Helen Mirren, and Meryl Streep come to mind. As well as my own mother. My mom is always elegant and sophistcated.

I will be 59 in a few weeks and for myself, I know that the days that I think I look my best are days when I have been eating right, exercising and doing yoga regularly, meditating, and getting enough sleep. Since I work at home I am usually in workout clothes and without make-up, so I can definitely ramp up my elegance and sophistication game.
